Gainesville sits on the north end of Lake Lanier, about an hour northeast of Atlanta, and it is the easiest base for a lake weekend. You get a state park and dozens of county and Corps of Engineers parks on the water, a branch of the Atlanta Botanical Garden, a nature preserve with miles of trails, and a downtown square that calls itself the Poultry Capital of the World. Here are the best things to do in Gainesville.
