Georgia has many more small tree farms than any one guide can list. The Georgia Forestry Commission’s Christmas tree directory is updated every October. Tips for Cutting Your Own Tree
Go Early for Tall Trees
The tallest trees and the pre-cut Fraser firs go first, often by the first weekend in December. If you want a 10-footer, go the weekend before or right after Thanksgiving.
Measure Before You Leave Home
Measure your ceiling height and the spot where the tree will stand, and leave room for the stand and the topper. Trees always look smaller in an open field than in a living room.
Know Your Southern Trees
Most Georgia farms grow cypress. Leyland and Murray cypress are soft, full and nearly scentless, and they don’t drop many needles. Carolina Sapphire is a blue-gray cypress with a citrusy scent. Virginia pine and red cedar have stiffer branches for heavy ornaments.
Keep It Watered
Put the tree in water as soon as you get home. If it sat for more than a few hours, cut a thin slice off the trunk first. Check the stand every day, since a fresh tree can drink a lot in the first week, and keep it away from heaters and fireplaces.
Dress for a Field
Tree fields are often muddy or frosty. Wear closed-toe shoes and gloves, and bring rope or straps in case the farm doesn’t bale or tie trees. Many small farms are cash or check only, so bring both.
Make a Day of It
Pair a farm with a light show or a holiday train. See our Christmas lights in Georgia guide, holiday train rides and the holiday events calendar.
