Helen and Dahlonega are the two North Georgia mountain towns visitors ask about most, and they sit just 27.7 miles apart, about 45 minutes by car. They could not feel more different: Helen is a Bavarian-style village built for festivals and river tubing, while Dahlonega is a real gold rush town with a historic square, wineries and the best access to big hikes. How Far Is Helen from Dahlonega?

The two towns are 27.7 miles apart by road, about 45 minutes without traffic. From Helen, head south on GA 75 to Cleveland, pick up GA 115 west, then follow GA 52 and GA 115 into downtown Dahlonega. It is a pretty drive through farm valleys and foothills, and it is short enough that many visitors stay in one town and spend an afternoon in the other.

From downtown Atlanta, Dahlonega is the closer of the two at about 65 miles (1 hour 25 minutes without traffic). Helen is about 87 miles away (1 hour 50 minutes). On fall and holiday weekends, add time for traffic on GA 400, U.S. 129 and GA 75.

Helen: Alpine Village and River Town

Helen rebuilt its downtown in a Bavarian look starting in 1969, and today its half-timbered shops, beer gardens and flower boxes line the Chattahoochee River. In summer, outfitters such as Cool River Tubing and Helen Tubing & Waterpark run river floats, typically from Memorial Day to Labor Day. In fall, Helen Oktoberfest, held since 1970, runs from September into early November. Dahlonega: Gold Rush History and Wine Country

Dahlonega was the site of America’s first major gold rush, and a U.S. Branch Mint opened in town in 1838. The Dahlonega Gold Museum, in the 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse on the square, tells that story with coins struck at the mint and gold from the surrounding hills. Choose Helen if you want a festive, walkable downtown with a distinct theme, river tubing, a big festival calendar and waterfalls close by. Choose Dahlonega if you want real history, wine tasting and easier access to serious hiking at Amicalola Falls and Springer Mountain.
