Dahlonega was the site of America’s first major gold rush, and its 1830s courthouse square is still the heart of town. It is the closest of the classic North Georgia mountain towns to Atlanta, about 65 miles and under an hour and a half away, and it pairs real history with wine country, the start of the Appalachian Trail and some of the best mountain biking in the Southeast. Here are the best things to do in Dahlonega, checked in October 2026.
