Statewide Headliner: Magical Nights of Lights at Lake Lanier Islands

What it is: Six-mile drive-through light show

2026-27 season: Nightly from November 20, 2026 through January 3, 2027, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., priced per vehicle. Confirm on the Lanier Islands website before you go.

Every holiday season, Lake Lanier Islands Resort flips the switch on Magical Nights of Lights, a six-mile drive-through show with more than a million lights. It is one of the largest light displays in the Southeast, and the resort's Snow Island adds an outdoor ice rink and snow tubing alongside it, so you can turn the visit into a full evening out rather than just a drive-through. Fantasy in Lights at Callaway Gardens

What it is: Drive-through holiday light display with an optional trolley ride

Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain runs Fantasy in Lights, one of the longest-running major holiday light displays in the region. Guests can see it from their own vehicle or aboard the Jolly Trolley, with light scenes such as the Tunnel of Lights and Snowflake Valley set to music. Since Callaway Gardens is already a destination for its 40-acre Callaway Brothers Azalea Bowl Garden and miles of nature trails, the holiday lights make it worth a stop even if you have visited in warmer months. Mountain towns like Helen, Dahlonega, and Blue Ridge lean hard into the holidays every year, with downtown light displays, tree lightings, and Christmas parades that cost nothing to enjoy. Helen in particular decorates its whole Bavarian-style downtown, which makes for a nice pairing with a fall or winter mountain drive. What it is: Seasonal decorations at Georgia's historic homes

Several of Georgia's historic homes and state historic sites, including the Chief Vann House in Chatsworth, dress up for the holidays with period-appropriate decorations. It is a quieter, more low-key way to get into the season than a big light show, and it pairs naturally with a fall foliage drive through North Georgia since many of these sites sit right along the state's scenic byways. Go on a weeknight if you can: The biggest displays draw heavy weekend traffic, especially in December. A weeknight visit usually means shorter lines and easier parking.
