Clarkesville, the Habersham County seat, is the most low-key of the North Georgia mountain towns: a historic square of antique shops, galleries and restaurants, with the Soque River running past and Lake Burton and Tallulah Gorge a short drive north. It is about 83 miles from Atlanta, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes without traffic. Here are the best things to do in and around Clarkesville, checked in October 2026.

Top Things to Do in Clarkesville

1. The historic square

Antique stores, galleries, cafes and restaurants line the square and Washington Street. The Historic Mauldin House, a Victorian cottage just off downtown, serves as the visitor center.

2. Mark of the Potter

A pottery shop in a 1930s grist mill on the Soque River north of town, in business since 1969. Admission is free; call ahead for current hours.

3. Fly-fish the Soque

The Soque River is famous with fly anglers, but most of it runs through private land, so the best water is fished through private guide services.

4. Moccasin Creek State Park

A small, flat state park on the shore of Lake Burton, about 20 miles north on GA 197, with an easy campground and lake access. $10 ParkPass per vehicle.

5. Panther Creek Falls

A creekside trail to a 50-foot double waterfall. The recreation area’s parking lot and restrooms are closed for Hurricane Helene repairs, and parts of the trail washed out, so it is for experienced hikers only for now.

6. Tallulah Gorge

North of town, a canyon nearly 1,000 feet deep with rim overlooks and a suspension bridge. $10 ParkPass per vehicle.
