1. Lighting of the Village
The season starts on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Local groups perform at Riverside Park, then Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive as the whole village lights up. Children can meet Santa from 5 to 7 p.m. Free.
2. Helen’s Christmas Market
Now in its 19th year, the Helen Chamber of Commerce’s market fills downtown with handmade gifts, decorations and sweets on two weekends. Admission is free; for a meal, the town’s restaurants are steps away.
3. Helen’s Christmas Parade
A small-town parade with fire trucks, horses, floats and candy, and Santa at the end. The CVB’s tip: watch from across the street from the downtown gazebo. It goes on rain or shine.
Downtown’s Christmas lights stay up through the holidays and are free to see. For the bigger drive-through shows in the region, from Lanier Islands to Hiawassee, see the best Christmas lights in the NE Georgia Mountains.
