Helen leans into its Alpine-village look every December, stringing its entire downtown with lights and running an annual Christmas parade in early-to-mid December, with Santa arriving on Main Street in a classic Bavarian sleigh. Because the whole town is decorated rather than one ticketed attraction, it costs nothing to walk through, and it pairs naturally with dinner at one of Helen's German restaurants.

Dahlonega's Old-Fashioned Christmas

What it is: Historic downtown light displays, a tree lighting, and a Christmas parade

2026 dates: Christmas in Dahlonega lists the Lighting of the Square for Friday, November 27, with free Santa visits on the square from November 27 through December 29. The parade date had not been posted when we checked on October 1, 2026; see christmasindahlonega.com.

Dahlonega's Old-Fashioned Christmas centers on the town square, with a lighting of downtown, a tree lighting, a Christmas parade, and visits with Santa spread across several dates in late November and December. Lights and decorations in the historic district typically stay up from dusk to 11 p.m. through the first week of January, so it is worth a stop even if you miss the parade itself.

Mountain Country Christmas in Lights, Hiawassee

What it is: A drive-and-walk holiday light show at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds

2026 dates: Thursday through Saturday evenings, 6 to 9 p.m., from November 26 through December 12; then every night December 17 through 24 (closed Christmas Day), and drive-through only December 26 through 31. Admission is $12 per person with children 12 and under free, or $25 per car on drive-through nights.

The Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds in Hiawassee hosts Mountain Country Christmas in Lights, with a holiday light show, Christmas music, craft and food vendors, and Santa. It has typically run Thursday through Saturday evenings from late November through mid-December, then nightly through Christmas Eve, with a modest per-person admission and free entry for young children. Go on a weeknight if you can: Lake Lanier Islands draws heavy weekend traffic in December; a weeknight visit usually means a shorter wait to get on the drive-through route.
