Most people think of Rock City as a Chattanooga attraction, but it sits on the Georgia side of Lookout Mountain, in Walker County. Since 1932 visitors have squeezed through its sandstone passages, crossed its swinging bridge and looked out from Lover’s Leap toward what the signs promise are seven states. This guide covers Rock City and the rest of Georgia’s Lookout Mountain, from Cloudland Canyon to hang gliding and the Chickamauga battlefield, with drive times and tips. We checked the details on October 21, 2026.

Rock City Gardens
Rock City grew out of Frieda Carter’s rock garden. She marked a trail with string around the giant boulders on top of Lookout Mountain, planted wildflowers along it and set out German gnomes and fairy tale figures. Her husband, Garnet Carter, who had launched Tom Thumb miniature golf, opened it to the public on May 21, 1932, and hired sign painter Clark Byers to paint “See Rock City” on barn roofs across the country. More than half a million people visit each year.

The Enchanted Trail
The main trail winds through narrow rock passages, past Balanced Rock and through gardens of more than 400 species of native wildflowers, shrubs and trees.
Lover’s Leap and the Seven States Flag Court
The cliff-edge overlook at the heart of Rock City, with a waterfall below and a view that on clear days is said to reach seven states.
Swing-A-Long Bridge
A swaying suspension bridge across a chasm on The Bridges Path, beside a solid stone bridge for anyone who would rather not wobble.
Fairyland Caverns and Mother Goose Village
Black-lit caverns full of nursery-rhyme and fairy-tale scenes near the end of the trail. Kids love it; it is a bit of 1940s roadside kitsch for adults.
Seasonal events change the experience. The Enchanted Garden of Lights fills the gardens with holiday lights in winter, and the Enchanted Pumpkin Patch runs in fall. Buy tickets online before you go, and check the calendar for event nights and hours.
Tips for Visiting Rock City
Allow time
Most people spend 1 to 2 hours on the self-guided trail, more with kids or a stop to eat.
Wear real shoes
The trail has stairs, narrow squeezes and uneven stone paths. Rock City is partially accessible: an ADA ramp from the Gardens Gateway entrance leads about half a mile round trip to Lover’s Leap and the Seven States Flag Court.
Go early or late
Summer afternoons and fall weekends are busiest. Arrive at opening, or go on a weekday.
Watch the time zone
Rock City is in Georgia, but most nearby Chattanooga attractions are in Tennessee. Both are on Eastern time, so there is no clock change.
Ruby Falls and the Incline Railway are a few minutes away on the Tennessee side of the mountain, and the Chattanooga riverfront is about 15 minutes down the hill.
Cloudland Canyon State Park
On the western edge of Lookout Mountain, about 50 minutes south of Rock City, Cloudland Canyon State Park is one of the most scenic parks in Georgia: 3,538 acres around a canyon about a thousand feet deep, with two waterfalls at the bottom of a strenuous staircase trail, 64 miles of hiking trails, 18 cottages and 10 yurts. The rim overlooks are a short, flat walk from the parking area. $10 ParkPass. Compare it with Georgia’s other big canyon in Tallulah Gorge vs. Cloudland Canyon.

Hang gliding
Lookout Mountain Flight Park, on Scenic Highway near Rising Fawn, is one of the best-known hang gliding schools in the country. First-timers can take a tandem flight with an instructor, towed aloft by an ultralight plane. Book ahead, and expect weather delays.
Chickamauga Battlefield
The first and largest unit of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, about 20 minutes from Rock City, with a visitor center, monuments and driving tour. See our Chickamauga Civil War sites guide.
Covenant College
The castle-like main building of this small college on the mountaintop, once the Lookout Mountain Hotel, is visible from miles around.
Scenic drives
Highway 157 runs along the top of the mountain between Rock City and Cloudland Canyon, past farms, woods and glimpses of the valleys below.
Plan a Lookout Mountain Weekend
| Day | Morning | Afternoon |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday | Rock City at opening | Chickamauga battlefield, then dinner in Chattanooga |
| Sunday | Cloudland Canyon rim and waterfalls | Drive home, or stay in a Cloudland cottage or yurt |
Sleep in the park at Cloudland Canyon (see state park cabins and glamping in Georgia), or stay in Chattanooga. Heading home through northwest Georgia? Stop in Rome, about an hour and a half south of Rock City, or see the 25 best state parks in Georgia for more ideas.
