Cowhouse Unit (Quail, Rabbit, & Squirrel Only): Aug. 15- Sept. 29, Oct. 5- Nov. 4, Nov. 9- Feb. 28. Pointing dogs allowed on quail hunts only. No furbearer season. Feral hog may be taken during small game dates after Oct. 31.
Turkey
Cowhouse Unit; Mar. 21- May 15. In accordance with Dixon Memorial WMA regulations. Sign-In at Dixon Memorial WMA or at refuge Cowhouse kiosk if on refuge property.
Special Regulations
Suwannee Canal Unit: Chesser Island for wheelchair hunters only. Shotguns with slugs or muzzleloaders; Shooting hours close at noon. Permit required; Apply by Aug.31. All selected hunters will be charged a $12.50 permit fee. A special refuge tag will be provided for up to two harvested deer upon check-out. All hunters must check-out. No dogs allowed. Cowhouse Island Unit: Foot traffic only. Check-In/Out or Sign-In/Out at Dixon Memorial WMA or at refuge Cowhouse kiosk if on refuge property. Call for more information at 912-496-7836 9am-5pm daily. Alligator and bear hunting are prohibited.
Free Hunter Education Courses at Okefenokee NWR
Hunter Education CD Courses- Two-hour condensed version of the above course, requiring the completion of a self-guided CD tutorial before attending a two-hour class. Courses offered November 8, and December 13, 2008 from 10am-12noon, October 12, 2008 from 1pm-3pm, and January 10, 2009 from 10am–12 noon. CD’s may be picked up from the Okefenokee NWR Visitor Center or Mike Brooks, or used at the Charlton County Public Library.
Special Note: Residents and non-residents born on or after Jan. 1, 1961 and are 12 years old or older must successfully complete a hunter education course prior to purchasing a season hunting license to hunt outside their own land.
