Be a part of the magic this holiday season at the Savannah Harbor Foundation Eighth Annual Boat Parade of Lights! The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa once again will host one of Savannah’s most beloved traditions, the Boat Parade of Lights, featuring around 50 elaborately decorated vessels on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. The celebration kicks off with a tree lighting and ceremonious reading of a declaration by a fully-costumed General James Oglethorpe, accompanied by the Savannah Pipe and Drum Corps at 6 pm; boat parade commences at 6:30 pm with the firing of a cannon. Starting at Dusk at the old paper mill site, the walking parade proceeds down Osborne Street with Santa & Mrs. Santa leading the way. Picture it all: Dance performances are a part fo the parade. Tybee is a natural setting for the Mardi Gras event due to its unique character and fun-loving residents. The event will encompass the traditions of Mardi Gras, an event with origins dating back to the ancient Romans and carried on today in cities such as Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana. Mardi Gras is held on the last day before the start of Lent. Tybee will be dressed in an array of purple, gold and green flags depicting the Tybee Island Mardi Gras celebration. Beach Bum Parade - 5/21/10 at 6:30-&;30 pm
Like most parades, there are floats pulled behind cars and trucks. Unlike most parades, however, the floats, often trailers or boats, are filled with water-throwing paraphernalia. Spectators, lined up along the parade route on Butler Avenue, are armed with buckets, squirt guns and hoses. What results is an all-out water war for fun loving beach bums of all ages.
