• Chickamauga Battlefield (Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park) - More than 1,000 monuments mark the 1863 battle, which caused about 34,000 Union and Confederate casualties. • Elsie A. Holmes Nature Park - Five walking trails along South Chickamauga Creek, fishing, picnicking and a 1,500-square-foot screened pavilion that groups can reserve. Run by Catoosa County Parks & Recreation, 706-891-4199 - 88 Ben Holmes Rd., Ringgold, GA 30736 (I-75 Exit 348).
• Jack Mattox Recreation Complex - About 55 acres on Pine Grove Road in Ringgold with lighted ball fields, fishing ponds, a walking track, a wetland area and a 9-hole disc golf course. 706-891-4199.

Coffee County Parks

• Broxton Rocks Preserve - A sandstone outcrop of the Altamaha Grit with a waterfall, rock shelters and rare plants found nowhere else in south Georgia. The Nature Conservancy owns the preserve, and public access is limited to a one-mile waterfall trail in June-August, Easter Sunday and scheduled tours. Contact The Nature Conservancy at 404-873-6946 before you go.

Cook County Parks

• Alapaha River - The river flows along Cook County and offers freshwater fishing, along with many private ponds and lakes in the county.

Nearby: Paradise Public Fishing Area, a Georgia DNR fishing area at 536 Paradise Dr. in Enigma, is just across the line in Berrien County, as are the Nashville city parks once listed here.

Coweta County Parks

• Oak Grove Plantation and Gardens - A National Register-listed plantation house from the 1840s with old-fashioned flower and shrub gardens, about 6 miles from Newnan. • Crisp County Recreation Department - Swimming pools, walking tracks, playgrounds, tennis courts and a summer day camp for children. Open Mon-Fri 8:30 am-5:30 pm. I-75 Exit 99, 8th Avenue to 5th Street North.
• Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park and Lake Blackshear - The roughly 8,600-acre lake is known for boating, skiing and bass fishing, and hosts bass tournaments. • Kolomoki Mounds State Park - Eight earthen mounds built between about A.D. 250 and 950, including Georgia’s oldest great temple mound. The park museum is currently closed; rangers offer guided tours and programs instead. Camping, two lakes with boat rental and fishing, a swimming beach, three hiking trails and picnicking. 229-724-2150 - 205 Indian Mounds Rd., Blakely, GA 39823.
• Coheelee Creek Covered Bridge - Built in 1891 and considered the southernmost covered bridge still standing in the United States, with a picnic area by the creek. 229-723-3741 - Ga. Hwy. 62 and Old River Rd., Blakely, GA 39823. From the courthouse square, take Hwy. 62 west about 9 miles, turn right at the Coheelee sign and follow the road (part dirt) about a mile to the park.

Effingham County Parks

• Veterans Memorial Park - Honors Effingham County residents who served from the Revolutionary War to the Gulf War, with more than 3,300 names on its wall, an eternal flame and a fountain lit at night. Open day and night. Ga. Hwy. 21 and First St., Springfield (behind the hospital).

Madison County Parks

• Sammy A. Haggard Park - The department’s main park, with lighted softball, baseball and football fields, a walking track, batting cages, tennis courts, pavilions, playgrounds, the Rotary Splash Island splash pad and disc golf. 1345 Hwy. 98 W., Danielsville.
• Cliff Mize Park - A 10-acre park off Hwy. 29 South on Colbert Grove Church Road.
• Diamond Hill Softball Complex - The county’s softball center, south of Cliff Mize Park off Hwy. 29.
• The department also runs the Brewer Phillips Sports Complex, Briar’s Landing and Memorial Park and Old Gym.

Mitchell County Parks

• Flint River Park - A 16-acre park overlooking the Flint River with riverside campsites, fishing, bird watching, kayaking and canoeing. 229-669-3162 - 11151 Old Georgia Hwy. 3, Albany, GA 31705.
• Courthouse Square Park - Green space behind the 1936 white-marble courthouse in downtown Camilla, shaded by six live oaks more than 200 years old that are registered as landmark trees.
• The recreation department runs the county’s ball fields, community centers, gyms, tennis courts and walking track.
