The Cox/Armstrong Civil War Collection - 1/29 - 1/30/15
The City of Smyrna installed three displays containing selections from a collection of Civil War artifacts collected by Gerald Cox. Gerald Cox (1945-1996) was an Atlanta Civil War artifacts collector who grew up in a family of Civil War historians. As a boy in the 1950s, he spent many weekends in Smyrna and visited the Carmichael Plantation, near I-285, where he searched the area of the battle that reached Atlanta, having passed through Smyrna in 1864. He found his first relic, a lead .58-caliber bullet and was hooked. He and his family continued exploring, building a huge collection of artifacts through the years. A portion of the collection is now displayed on the 2nd floor at Smyrna City Hall (2800 King Street, Smyrna Ga.) with two additional displays on the 2nd levels of the Smyrna Public Library (100 Village Green Circle, Smyrna Ga.) and Brawner Hall (3180 Atlanta Road, Smyrna Ga.). Find information at www.SmyrnaCity.com / Residents / History and Points of Interest / Cox Armstrong Collection. Handicapped Accessible. Show at 8am-5pm. Free admission and parking. Phone: 770-434-6600 - 3 Smyrna Locations: 3180 Atlanta Road, 100 Village Green Circle, and 2800 King St, Smyrna, Georgia 30080
Winston Churchill and the Pursuit of Painting - 1/29 - 2/1/15
The Art of Diplomacy: Winston Churchill and the Pursuit of Painting will display more than 30 paintings by Winston Churchill, many of which have never before been publicly exhibited, and examine the notion that painting may have helped save Western civilization. Although a hobby, Winston Churchill wrote of the effect that it had on him personally and professionally. At the beginning in 1915, painting literally pulled Churchill out of his darkest political days and set him on his journey toward his finest hour. It was painting, he said, that helped him cope with the stress and strain of his political life, and allowed him to be productive as he developed his thinking about the rising danger of Hitler and Germany. In addition, Churchill found that the skills he learned from painting made his leadership more effective, and he used his painter's eye to achieve his political and diplomatic goals. Admission cost is $10 - $12. Call for hours open. Phone: 404-881-0900 - Address: Millennium Gate Museum, 395 17th St NW, Atlanta, GA 30363
