The Cox/Armstrong Civil War Collection - 3/4-3/6, 3/9-3/13, 3/16-3/20, 3/23-3/27 & 3/30-3/31/15
The City of Smyrna installed three displays containing selections from a collection of Civil War artifacts collected by Gerald Cox. Gerald Cox (1945-1996) was an Atlanta Civil War artifacts collector who grew up in a family of Civil War historians. As a boy in the 1950s, he spent many weekends in Smyrna and visited the Carmichael Plantation, near I-285, where he searched the area of the battle that reached Atlanta, having passed through Smyrna in 1864. He found his first relic, a lead .58-caliber bullet and was hooked. He and his family continued exploring, building a huge collection of artifacts through the years. A portion of the collection is now displayed on the 2nd floor at Smyrna City Hall (2800 King Street, Smyrna Ga.) with two additional displays on the 2nd levels of the Smyrna Public Library (100 Village Green Circle, Smyrna Ga.) and Brawner Hall (3180 Atlanta Road, Smyrna Ga.). In March, you can experience these unique places first-hand through guided hikes and events at Arabia, Panola and Stone Mountain. "Ruins to Rapids" Full Moon Hike - 3/6/15 at 6:30-8:30pm
This 1.5-mile hike is moderately difficult and goes down to the Civil War-era textile mill ruins of New Manchester and follows the lovely rapids (up to class IV) of Sweetwater Creek. A flashlight and sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required. No children under six or dogs. Meet inside the Visitor's Center. Costs are $6 per person and $5 parking fee. Virtuoso Strings! - 3/7/15 at 8-10pm
We are bringing back our feature spotlighting our strings musicians, in an exceptional display of skill and technique, not to mention outstanding musicianship. This wide-ranging program features repertoire from Bach and Bartok to Tchaikovsky and Copland. Be prepared to be amazed! Grab your bike and sense of adventure as we bike 16 miles round trip from Panola Mountain State Park to Davidson-Arabia Nature Preserve and back. Guided by Park Rangers, we'll make stops at several cultural sites and trails to learn more about the history and landscape of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. Southern Beer Tours: SweetWater, Orpheus, Jailhouse - 3/7/15 at 12noon-5pm
We will start the day off with a private tour and tasting at SweetWater Brewing Company. You'll be able to avoid the lines and experience Georgia's largest craft brewery like a VIP! Next we make our first visit to one of the best new breweries in the state, Orpheum Brewing. Our last stop will be a little south of the city in Hampton, Georgia to Jailhouse Brewing. Suwanee American Craft Beer Fest - 3/14/15 at 12noon-5pm
Suwanee Beer Fest is one of the most premier American craft beer events in the South. General Admission ticket holders receive an unlimited tasting of over 250 beers, a commemorative tasting glass and access to the festival. Harbingers of Spring Discovery Hike at West Palisades - 3/29/15 at 10am-3:30pm
Join the National Park Service and Georgia Botanical Society for a wonderful early spring afternoon. This hike will lead us along the river, across Rottenwood Creek,, and around Blood Rock Ridge in the West Palisades. Enjoy grand views of the East Palisades, including the site of "Nancy Old Towne", a Woodland Culture Village site; and the Chattahoochee River. Returning to Rottenwood Creek we will venture a short distance on the paved multi-use trail to see Trout Lilies and discover other harbingers of spring. The Cox/Armstrong Civil War Collection - 6/1-6/5, 6-8-6/12 & 6/15-6/20/15 at 8am-5pm
The City of Smyrna installed three displays containing selections from a collection of Civil War artifacts collected by Gerald Cox. Gerald Cox (1945-1996) was an Atlanta Civil War artifacts collector who grew up in a family of Civil War historians. As a boy in the 1950s, he spent many weekends in Smyrna and visited the Carmichael Plantation, near I-285, where he searched the area of the battle that reached Atlanta, having passed through Smyrna in 1864. He found his first relic, a lead .58-caliber bullet and was hooked. He and his family continued exploring, building a huge collection of artifacts through the years. A portion of the collection is now displayed on the 2nd floor at Smyrna City Hall (2800 King Street, Smyrna Ga.) with two additional displays on the 2nd levels of the Smyrna Public Library (100 Village Green Circle, Smyrna Ga.) and Brawner Hall (3180 Atlanta Road, Smyrna Ga.).
