Geology Hike - 10/1/16 at 10am-12noon
Geologist John Johnston will lead a moderate 2-mile hike identifying rocks and explaining how and when they formed. He will also explain the tectonic events that forced the rock units to be faulted and folded. There will be a visit down to the ruins of the Civil War-era New Manchester Mill alongside the lovely rapids of Sweetwater creek. Costs are $5 per person and $5 parking fee. Located in a hotel on a Civil War site, many dealers offer coins, currency, bullion and collectibles at the Greater Atlanta Coin Show one Sunday per month. Visitors can browse, buy, sell or trade at the show. The experienced dealers also offer free verbal appraisals for items brought to the show. Other collectibles are also on display, such as medals, Civil War artifacts, stock certificates, scrip from coal miners, jewelry and gemstones. Spooky Walk-N-Wag - 10/15/16 at 11am-2pm
This year, Six Flags Over Georgia will be launching its annual Fright Fest by hosting the 3rd annual Spooky Walk-N-Wag Dog Walk and Costume Parade on Saturday, October 15. We are inviting dog owners to get their dogs into the Halloween spirit! Owners should dress their dogs up in their favorite (or maybe their first-ever) Halloween costume and bring them to the park. We will have a course set up in the park where the dogs will walk around the amusement park for approximately one mile. To participate you must bring a 5lb bag of dog food. Intro to Tree Climbing - 10/15/16 at 1-5pm
Join us "on rope" for an adventure exploring the canopy above. This is an introductory program to recreational tree climbing. Participants will use rope and harness to ascend into a 200+ year old Southern Red Oak, where they can climb, swing, and scramble. Climbs start at 1 PM and 3 PM. Must call to register. Ages 8 and up. Click title for details. This strenuous activity is well worth the effort. Climbers can choose how high they would like to go and even swing to and walk on branches 30= feet off the ground. Close-toed shoes and long pants recommended. Hair longer than shoulder length should be pulled back in a low ponytail. All equipment is provided. Arrive early to allow for walking time. Our Climbing tree, Naomi Ruth, is located across Lower Alexander Lake from the Alexander Lakes Parking Area and can be access easily by a short walk across the dam on the PATH Trail. once across, the second trail on the right, leading into the meadow, takes you to the Tree. If you hit Scout Lake Primitive Camping, you've gone too far. Costs are $15 per person and $5 parking fee.
