Olmsted Plein Air Invitational - 4/26/15 at 9am-6pm
Enjoy this four-day rain or shine event featuring 30 of the world's greatest collectible artists producing beautiful paintings for purchase. Each artist will be vying for their piece of the $10,000 purse. Complementary tours, lectures and demonstrations will be ongoing. There will be ticketed events to mix and mingle with the invited artists. Paintings will be first offered for sale at a ticketed Preview and Collector's Soirée on April 25, 2015. All paintings will be available for purchase to the public on April 26. Paint Quick is a plein air painting competition, exhibit and sale that is open to anyone who wishes to participate. Historic New Manchester History Hike - 4/26/15 at 3-4:30pm
This mile-long hike (easy to moderate) will lead to the five story ruins of the Civil War-era New Manchester textile mill and focus on the history of the Sweetwater Creek Valley. This ranger-led hike will include going to the ruins and seeing the lovely whitewater rapids, which provide great photo opportunities. Meet at the Visitor's Center. Ranger-led Lake Paddle - 4/26/15 at 2-3:30pm
Join us for a ranger-led, peaceful outing on the lake and up Beaver Creek. This trip is for those 16 years or older who can swim or children 6 years or older who can swim and are accompanied by an adult. Meet at the Bait Shop. Register in advance. Costs are $20 per person, which includes a canoe or tandem kayak, PFD, and paddle. $5 parking fee.

The Cox/Armstrong Civil War Collection - 4/27 - 4/30/15
The City of Smyrna installed three displays containing selections from a collection of Civil War artifacts collected by Gerald Cox. Gerald Cox (1945-1996) was an Atlanta Civil War artifacts collector who grew up in a family of Civil War historians. As a boy in the 1950s, he spent many weekends in Smyrna and visited the Carmichael Plantation, near I-285, where he searched the area of the battle that reached Atlanta, having passed through Smyrna in 1864. He found his first relic, a lead .58-caliber bullet and was hooked. He and his family continued exploring, building a huge collection of artifacts through the years. A portion of the collection is now displayed on the 2nd floor at Smyrna City Hall (2800 King Street, Smyrna Ga.) with two additional displays on the 2nd levels of the Smyrna Public Library (100 Village Green Circle, Smyrna Ga.) and Brawner Hall (3180 Atlanta Road, Smyrna Ga.). Geology Hike - 5/23/15 at 1-3pm
Geologist John Johnston will lead a moderate two-mile hike identifying rocks and explaining how and when they formed. He will also explain the tectonic events that forcedthe rock units to be faulted and folded. There will be a visit down to the ruins of the Civil War-era New Manchester Mill alongside the lovely rapids of Sweetwater creek. Costs are $5 per person and $5 parking.
