Pottery at Mudfire Studio
Fans and collectors can meet the artists and experience world-class clay by some of the top
studio potters in the Southeast at the artist reception on October 10 from 5-9pm. The exhibition continues through November 21 at MudFire Gallery.
About the Show
The annual "Asheville in Atlanta" show is curated by Kyle Carpenter, a highly regarded studio potter whose work has won acclaim throughout the United States. Each year Kyle Carpenter invites a select group of artists from in and around Asheville to participate. Selected on the basis of their artistry, technical achievement and aesthetic principles, the artists singularly contribute to a complex tapestry of Western North Carolina fine craft.

This year's show will feature functional pottery by Lindsay Rogers, a resident artist at the landfill-methane fueled EnergyXchange cooperative. Her work foreshadows the decades or even millennia of use that clay objects are likely to see before they are reclaimed into the earth.

Karen Newgard's intensely decorated surfaces are intended to honor daily routines with a level of festivity and décor. Influenced by the flattened perspective and many vantage points of Southern Folk Art, Karen's porcelain vessels are awash with images of the natural world… birds, insects, grasses and trees.

John Britt is a self-taught potter, whose 20-year career focusing on glaze explorations has resulted in surfaces unmatched and frequently heretofore unseen in the contemporary world of clay. Using vessels as canvas, John wields his unparalleled knowledge of chemistry and clay-anthropology to present exquisite colors and textures to complement the forms.

Jennifer Hoolihan's unassuming forms provide a beautiful canvas for playful patterns. Easily
accessible and infinitely functional, her work recalls simpler times and pleasures of handmade objects. Contemporary designs that are respectful of craftsman traditions are the hallmarks of Jennifer's studio pottery.

Kyle Carpenter's work exhibits a fusion of striking designs with traditional materials & process, noteworthy for his masterful use of slips, brushwork, minimalist glazing, and a warmly inviting finish. The combination of three-dimensional forms and two-dimensional drawings is a natural fusion of both his love of drawing and pottery, art and craft.

Detailed information about each artist, including artist statement, resumes, and images of representative works, are available at: http://www.mudfire.com/asheville-in-atlanta-2009.htm.
