This scenic 588-acre barrier island near historic Savannah has both salt and fresh water thanks to the estuaries and marshes that flow through it. Two nature trails wind through marshes, live oaks, cabbage palmettos and longleaf pines, where you can watch for deer, raccoon, shore birds and rare migrating birds such as the Painted Bunting.

Driving directions: Located 15 miles southeast of Savannah on Diamond Causeway. Take I-16 to Savannah, exit at I-516 (Exit 164A), which turns into DeRenne Ave. Turn right on Waters Ave., which turns into Diamond Causeway. Park is on the left.

The park borders Skidaway Narrows, part of the Intracoastal Waterway. Its visitor center houses a giant ground sloth fossil replica, a birding station, nature exhibits and a reptile room.

Camping & Cabins

50-Foot Campsites

Pull-thru sites that hold 1 tent, 2 tents, a pop-up trailer, or a trailer or motorhome up to 50 feet. Each has water, 30-amp electric (a limited number of 50-amp sites are first come, first served), a limited number of full hookups, cable hookup, picnic table, grill and fire ring. The comfort station has a washer/dryer. Maximum 6 people and 2 vehicles per site. 25 miles from beach access.

Pioneer Campsite

A primitive, rugged site for groups of at least 10, hike-in only with no vehicles allowed. Located by itself about ½ mile from the parking area. Has water, a small shelter, pit toilets and a fire ring. 25 miles to beach access.

Camper Cabins

3 mini-cabins sleep 4–5 people each, with a screened porch, bathroom with shower, kitchen, master bedroom and kids’ sleeping loft. Bring your own linens and cooking supplies. Outside: a picnic table, grill and fire ring surrounded by live oaks and Spanish moss.

Picnic Shelters

Shelter #1

Open-sided covered shelter near the playground and swimming pool, within 200 yards of the nature center. Has water, electricity, picnic tables and grills. ParkPass required.

Shelters #2–#5

Open-sided covered shelters in the day-use area, adjacent to parking and restrooms. Each has water, electricity, grills and tables. Shelter #4 is accessible; a large playground sits between Shelters #4 and #5. ParkPass required. 25 miles from beach access.

Group Shelter

End shelter in the day-use area with heat/AC, a separate kitchen, tables and chairs for 150, a BBQ and an oyster-cooking shed next door, plus volleyball courts and restrooms. Occupancy not to exceed 150. Renters are responsible for making sure guests obtain a ParkPass. 25 miles to beach access.
