Design Your own Dazzling Landscape - 11/5/09 at 9 am
This program will cover the basics of how to develop or improve your existing landscape plan. Principles of landscape design as well as site analysis and plant selection will be covered. We will also look at how to develop a plan for trouble areas such as spots that are too shady, too wet or too dry. The program will include numerous handouts as well as lunch and refreshments. Basic Botany - 11/7/09 at 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Basic botany provides an introduction to general plant anatomy, morphology, and physiology, with an emphasis on relating form to function. Using live material and slides, students will make detailed observations of root, stem, and leaf tissues and discuss the processes of water and nutrient movements. Lasagna Gardening: Not cooking, but gardening! - 11/7/09 at 3-5 pm
This is not a cooking class or a gardening class that talks about growing ingredients for the perfect lasagna, but rather a method that requires no digging, no tilling, or removing your grass. It’s true! Join Amy Hanlder in this hands-on class to learn about a nontraditional method of layering organic matter to create a rich bed ready to plant with greens for the fall and summer veggies next spring. Fall Container Planting - 11/10/09 at 5:30-7:30 pm
Connie, a landscape architect and Garden staff member, will create fall containers as she discusses the principles of design. These design principles, including color, formand balance, will be explained in one of several handouts that you can take home with you. Garden Earth Naturalist Home-School Club - 1/6 - 2/24/10 at 9-11 am
Each GEN club meeting will offer exciting hands-on opportunities for youth to learn about a different ‘earthy’ topic. Club members will explore ‘free services’ that all ecosystems provide such as pollination, air and water purification, pest control, soil production and recycling as they participate in discovery hunts, environmental games, nature hikes, crafts and more. Youth will have the opportunity to collect data as ecologists in the forest and streams at the Garden. GEN club members will earn a certificate as they complete their eight week learning adventure. Native plants are uniquely adapted to local conditions, having co-evolved with other plants, animals, pollinators, and soil biota. Therefore they require little maintenance and withstand temperature and moisture extremes. Most importantly, native plants provide diverse sources of food and shelter for a wide variety of insects and birds, butterflies, mammals, reptiles, etc. in the complex web of life. Arbor Day Celebration with Old Man Spruce - 2/6/10 at 1-3 pm
Why are plants and trees so important? Trees provide many things for humans and other organisms in any ecosystem. Come meet Old Man Spruce (a puppet with personality!) and discover all the important things trees provide. Our Shared Forests Saturday Program Series - 2/13 - 2/27/10 at 10:00 -11:30 am
Join this fun Saturday adventure and share what you learned by leading an activity station at our annual Forest Festival on March 3rd! Our Shared Forests (OSF) is Ecuador and Georgia’s Migratory Bird Partnership. In Ecuador, OSF targets habitat conservation throughout the Chocó Andean Corridor, one of the earth’s top five biodiversity hotspots. While, in both Ecuador and Georgia, it aims at creating awareness about 10 bird species that migrate between both regions. This Saturday program series explores migratory birds and their shared habitats through exciting hands-on activities including discovery hunts, bird observation and ID at feeding stations, a migration game, hikes, related crafts and a variety of other hands-on activities. 2010 Southern Garden Heritage Conference - 2/19/10 at 9 am – 4 pm
Robin Salmon will open the conference with a lecture about garden sculpture and close the conference with a presentation about Brookgreen Gardens, one of America's finest sculpture gardens. Sue Burgess will provide a brief history of efforts to save the historic Root House in Marietta and create a garden of the period. Keyes Williamson will provide an update on work being done to preserve the Elizabeth Lawrence Garden in Charlotte. John Waters and Jim Cothran will provide a look into the architecture and gardens of Savannah and their interrelationships. And Gerard Krewer will speak about some of Georgia's rare and unusual fruits-some familiar and some unfamiliar.
