Discover St. Marys GA Historic Catholic Church - The Chapel began as a bank in 1840; however, the bank failed after seven years. Stay and Play in GA!
Mrs. Marie Ponce Defour and her husband Lewis purchased the Chapel for their church as they had no formal place of worship.
Worship services had previously been held above a store in the waterfront. Many of these Parishioners were Acadians who came from Novia Scotia seeking religious freedom. A bell tower was added to the building and the Chapel was utilized until 1957 when a new, much larger church was built on Dillingham St.
The Chapel became neglected. The bell tower became unsafe and had to be removed. Several years ago, a group of ladies from Our lady Star of the Sea formed a Chapel Guild.
After many rummage sales, raffles, bake sales, donations, weddings and countless other fundraising ventures, the Guild hired an attorney to clear the title to the property, which is now owned by the Diocese of Savannah.
Operating Hours & Seasons
The Chapel is open for Mass on First Friday, Easter service, Stations of the Cross, Christmas Eve Service, weddings, baptisms, renewal of vows and for tours.
