Mission and General Info
This regional, hands-on nature center in Columbus, Georgia is dedicated to providing quality educational programs and resources that promote environmental awareness and citizen science.

Our mission is to inspire individuals to conserve, protect and restore the natural environment.

It sits in a bend of the Chattahoochee River in south Columbus, across the street from the new National Infantry Museum at Ft. Benning. Our two "easy walking" nature trails bring visitors close to wetland plants and wildlife - birds and butterflies, reptiles and amphibians, and if you're really lucky - wild bobcats.

Spend some time in the Center watching the wildlife at our feeding stations. Then head out to the trails to see the wading birds, herons, waterfowl and songbirds. You can spot otters, beaver and deer early in the morning from the paths by the ponds. Bring your binoculars, or ask us for loaners. We provide Leupold 6x30 Yosemite binoculars.

This is a wildlife sanctuary - so please leave your pets at home. No smoking, alcoholic beverages, hunting, fires, fishing, boating, camping, littering, running... you get the idea. Picnicking is allowed only in the area by the visitor parking lot. Please pack out your garbage.

Do NOT eat any wild fruits, mushrooms or berries. The Oxbow Meadows Environmental Park is built on a former landfill. Also, water moccasins and alligators have been spotted down by our lake, and rattlesnakes have been seen sunning themselves near the Center. These animals would rather flee than bite you. Just stay on the trails and watch where you walk.

You may notice colored flags, markers and grids in areas where we are conducting scientific studies. Please do not disturb them.
