Think you've got balance? Try our intro course to paddle-boarding with our experienced Naturalist. You will get wet, so be sure to dress appropriately. Barker's Creek Gristmill Demonstration - 10/1/16
Barker's Creek Mill has been providing the local community with milling services since 1944. It is built on the site of an older mill that served the community since the first white settlers arrived in the area in the 1820s. The mill is powered by a 12-foot overshot wheel set on babbet bearings. The mill itself is a vertical mill with two 16" flint/granite stones. Our volunteer miller is happy to answer any questions. Our stone-ground grits and cornmeal are available for purchase at the mill, or at the Hambidge Center gallery and gift shop. Free admission and parking. 2016 Georgia Folk Pottery Day and Michael Crocker Kiln Opening - 10/1/16 at 10am-1pm
This year's feature exhibit will be "Nub" the rooster man, an icon of Southern folk pottery who died September 22, 2015, at age 94. In tribute to Edwins life and dedication to his craft, a 65-piece exhibit of his outstanding work in clay will be displayed in the front gallery at Crocker Pottery. Explore a progression of his famous roosters, his earliest utilitarian ware before he began making roosters and many more unusual and unique forms that he made. Foxfire Mountaineer Festival - 10/1/16 at 10am-5pm
The Foxfire Mountaineer Festival is a single-day celebration of the rich heritage of the Southern Appalachian mountains, featuring traditional bluegrass music from numerous performers, demonstrations of time-honored handicrafts and trades, food, and all kinds of games and challenges for all age groups. Craftsfolk will be showing finished goods and/or demonstrating their mastery of woodworking, blacksmithing, folk pottery, crafts and many other talents. The outdoor field events give more adventurous visitors a chance to see how they would fare with physical and mental challenges from the past, such as brute-strength and endurance contests like wood-chopping and log-sawing, skill and speed trials like archery and greased pig chases, and simple schoolyard fun like three-legged/sack races. Indian Summer Festival - 10/1 - 10/2/16 at 9am-5pm
Enjoy a car show, crafts, music and dance performances, and family activities. On Saturday, the Run Above the Clouds 10K and a one-mile run will begin at 9 a.m. A Country Square Dance with a live band will start at 8 p.m. in the school gym. Advance dance tickets are $6; $8 at the door. Activities also include performances by elementary students of Woody Gap School, the crowning of the King and Queen, clogging, an auction, Mountain Rangers hand-to-hand combat demonstration, mountain music, and an archery demonstration. Food vendors will feature pork BBQ, hamburgers, hot dogs, funnel cakes, boiled peanuts, cotton candy, fried apple pies, homemade preserves and more. A Long And Accomplished Life Exhibit Opens - 10/22 & 10/25 - 10/29/16
This exhibition will feature a surgical re-enactment of the first painless surgery and musical entertainment by Sally and the Jefferson Fiddle Kids. The exhibit, which replaces the Medicine of the Civil War exhibit, will include documents and items from the vault relating to Dr. Long that have not previously been on display. Our popular disc golf course and other popular park areas are home to what remains of past homesteads that visitors easily overlook. Barker's Creek Gristmill Demonstration - 12/3/16
Barker's Creek Mill has been providing the local community with milling services since 1944. It is built on the site of an older mill that served the community since the first white settlers arrived in the area in the 1820s. The mill is powered by a 12-foot overshot wheel set on babbet bearings. The mill itself is a vertical mill with two 16" flint/granite stones. Our volunteer miller is happy to answer any questions. Our stone-ground grits and cornmeal are available for purchase at the mill, or at the Hambidge Center gallery and gift shop. Free admission and parking. Second Saturday Guided Hikes - 12/10/16 at 9-11am
Take a guided hike through the captivating scenery of Smithgall Woods. Guided hikes will be offered every second Saturday of the month (weather permitting). Throughout the year, hikes will rotate through the various trails located throughout Smithgall. All ages are welcome. Behind the Scenes Tour - 12/18/16 at 4-6pm
