Evenings of Intimate Jazz Series: Evan Christopher
2/17/18 - 2/17/18 Saturday: 8:00PM - 10:00PM

An Evenings of Intimate Jazz favorite, Evan Christopher combines virtuosity, immaculate taste, and enthusiasm with a commitment to exploring the full range of possibilities in the New Orleans clarinet tradition. His highly personal brand of "contemporary, early jazz" honors the legacies of early Creole clarinetists such as Sidney Bechet, Barney Bigard, and Omer Simeon. Critics remarking on Christopher's dynamic expressiveness have coined his style "close-encounter music" (NEW YORK TIMES) and have called his respect for the music traditions of New Orleans, "a triumph, joining the present seamlessly to a glorious past." (THE OBSERVER, UK).

Evan Christopher's journey on Clarinet Road began in 1994 when he left his native California to join the New Orleans music community.

The Intersection of Race and Class During the Civil Rights Movement: The Untold Story of Claudette Colvin
2/20/18 - 2/20/18 Tuesday: 11:00AM - 1:00PM

Rosa Parks is a name you probably already know well when it comes to the Civil Rights Movement and the bus boycott in Alabama. But before Parks, there was Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old girl that refused to give up her seat in 1955, sparking the flame for change. Claudette Colvin was not selected because of her darker skin color and because she was from the working poor. Although Colvin did not become the figure for the movement to desegregate public transportation, her contributions cannot go unnoticed. She went on to testify with three other women in the landmark 1956 federal suit Browder v. Gayle, which ultimately ended segregation on Alabama buses. This case was brought forth months after Rosa's action. Fred Gray, the attorney for Colvin and then Parks stated: Claudette gave all of us moral courage. If she had not done what she did, I am not sure that we would have been able to mount the support for Mrs. Rosa Parks.

Writer-director Philippe Faucon's long-running project of making films about those members of the French population traditionally left off-screen reaches a state of grace in Fatima, perfectly balancing sharp observation of the harsh realities of the immigrant experience with an inspiring story of individual resilience. Loosely based on a true story and featuring a superbly crafted, stoic performance by real-life cleaning lady Soria Zeroual, Fatima was awarded the French film industry's two highest distinctions for 2015, the Prix Louis Delluc and the César for best film of the year. A racy mix between South Park and Sesame Street, part flesh, part felt and packed with heart, AVENUE Q won the Tony "Triple Crown" for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book and is still the funniest show in New York City! This laugh-out-loud musical tells the timeless story of a bright-eyed college grad named Princeton who arrives in the city with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He has to move into a shabby apartment all the way out on AVENUE Q where he meets Kate (the girl next door), Lucy (the slut), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (the pervert), superintendent Gary Coleman (yes, that Gary Coleman) and other new friends! Together, they struggle to find jobs, dates and their ever-elusive purpose in life. Music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx. Rated R

Monstrous Regiment
2/16/18 - 2/24/18 Sunday: 7:30PM - 9:30PM

Borogravia is at war. Again. When Polly Perks' brother goes missing in action, she cuts off her hair, stuffs a sock down her breeches and enlists, hoping to find him. Finding she passes surprisingly successfully as a young man, Polly soon discovers that she's not alone in protecting a secret and that nothing in the improbable war is as it appears.

Monstrous Regiment is a wickedly funny look at the absurdities of war and ambiguities of identity. It is based on the 31st novel of (Sir) Terry Pratchett's wildly popular Discworld series, and adapted for the stage by Stephen Briggs. Rated PG-13.

"This was not a fairy-tale castle and there was no such thing as a fairy-tale ending, but sometimes you could threaten to kick the handsome prince in the ham-and-eggs."

Performances:

7:30 p.m.: February 16, 18, 20-24, 2018
2:30 p.m.: February 17 and 24, 2018
