Challenge of the Centuries Bike Ride - 5/29/16 at 8am
Join us this Memorial Day Weekend for The Challenge of the Centuries Bike Ride. Beginning and ending in Hartwell, Ga., (adjacent to beautiful Lake Hartwell and the Georgia/South Carolina border), participants enjoy riding loops that traverse rolling back country roads with picturesque scenery and minimum traffic. Each day, there are three different rides and routes: 100 miles, 100 kilometers and 50 kilometers. Enjoy the spectacular sight or the simple beauty of the wild roadside roses. Barker's Creek Gristmill Demonstration - 6/4/16
Barker's Creek Mill has been providing the local community with milling services since 1944. It is built on the site of an older mill that served the community since the first white settlers arrived in the area in the 1820s. The mill is powered by a 12-foot overshot wheel set on babbet bearings. The mill itself is a vertical mill with two 16" flint/granite stones. Our volunteer miller is happy to answer any questions. Our stone-ground grits and cornmeal are available for purchase at the mill, or at the Hambidge Center gallery and gift shop. Free admission and parking. Alto Spring Fling Parade & Festival - 6/4/16 at 11am-4pm
The first Saturday in June brings a down-home, country-loving life celebration in Alto as they host the annual Spring Fling Festival and Parade, featuring live country music entertainment all day, great food vendors, kids' activities, a tractor contest, a car competition, raffle prizes, crafts, and more. Huckleberry Loop Hike - National Trails Day - 6/4/16 at 10am
Join our naturalist for a nature hike around the Huckleberry Point Loop. This easy 3/4-mile loop will take you into a beautiful wooded area while hugging the shoreline of Lake Lanier. A Long And Accomplished Life Exhibit Opens - 10/22 & 10/25 - 10/29/16
This exhibition will feature a surgical re-enactment of the first painless surgery and musical entertainment by Sally and the Jefferson Fiddle Kids. Our Boos and Brews event combines many of Dahlonega Walking Tours signature paranormal stories with many new stories on a .5 mile paranormal walk. The tour includes stops at Dahlonega's charming, and in some cases, haunted and historic pubs and restaurants. Tours include six pub stops and all stories are completely indoors. 1.3 mile guided tour of Dahlonega with 14 stops. An entertaining, informative history of Dahlonega and its ghostly activity. Paranormal experiences of locals. Barker's Creek Gristmill Demonstration - 12/3/16
Barker's Creek Mill has been providing the local community with milling services since 1944. It is built on the site of an older mill that served the community since the first white settlers arrived in the area in the 1820s. The mill is powered by a 12-foot overshot wheel set on babbet bearings. The mill itself is a vertical mill with two 16" flint/granite stones. Our volunteer miller is happy to answer any questions. Our stone-ground grits and cornmeal are available for purchase at the mill, or at the Hambidge Center gallery and gift shop. Free admission and parking. Second Saturday Guided Hikes - 12/10/16 at 9-11am
Take a guided hike through the captivating scenery of Smithgall Woods. Guided hikes will be offered every second Saturday of the month (weather permitting). Throughout the year, hikes will rotate through the various trails located throughout Smithgall. All ages are welcome. For information regarding which trails are to be used, and to make reservations, please call the visitors center. No pets please. Free hiking event. $5 vehicle parking fee. Full-Moon Suspension Bridge Hike - 12/13/16 at 6-8pm
Enjoy a 1 mile hike that takes you down the stairs, across the suspension bridge and on the rim of the gorge under the full moon. Register in advance. Costs are $5 per person and $5 parking fee. Behind the Scenes Tour - 12/18/16 at 4-6pm
Get up close and personal with animals not seen on regular zoo visits. See babies from the nursery, including bottle-fed kangaroos, deer and more! Experience and take part in the training and enrichment of animals from owls to zebras. Allow three hours for the tour, including time at your leisure in the farm petting area.
