Slackline 101 - 1/31/14 at 1-2:30pm
A quarter-mile hike will take us to the site of Karl Wallenda's 1970 walk across the gorge on a tightrope. We will learn about the history of the tight rope walkers at Tallulah Gorge and teach the basics of walking on a slackline. No experience required. Ages 12 and up. Braselton Downtown Chocolate Walk - 2/5/15 at 4-7pm
"Walkers" will start by checking in at the Downtown Development Office to pick up a bag and map. Then you will stroll through the shops of Downtown Braselton. At each sweet stop along the chocolate walk, collect a chocolate treat. So grab someone special and get a head start on your Valentine's Day shopping. The three-part lecture series, "Civil War at 150," begins Feb. 12 and is sponsored by UNG's Department of History, Anthropology, and Philosophy. All events are free. The first lecture, "How the Civil War Impacted Georgia, and How Georgia Impacted the Civil War," is set for Feb. 12 and features Dr. John Inscoe of the University of Georgia. The second lecture, "UNG Historians Reflect on the Civil War," is scheduled for March 12 and will feature numerous UNG history faculty. Dr. J. David Hacker of the University of Minnesota will conclude the series on April 9, the anniversary of the war's end, with his presentation, "The Human Cost of the American Civil War." In 2012, Hacker published research that increased the death toll of the nation's deadliest war to 750,000. All programs will be in the Cleveland Ballroom in the Martha T. Atlanta Audubon Society Bird Walk - 2/13/15 at 9:30am-12noon
Fort Yargo has some great habitat, including marshland, mixed hardwood forest and an expansive open lake. We will look for a variety of birds like woodpeckers, warblers and wading birds. The curse placed on Oedipus lingers and haunts in this new and brilliant translation of Sophocles' classic drama. Fasching - German-style Mardi Gras - 2/14/15 at 7-11pm
The Fasching season begins at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month. This gives the Fasching Guilds in Germany plenty of time to create elaborate masks and costumes for the big celebration on the last night of the season before the fasting of Lent begins. In Alpine Village of Helen, we also celebrate the last night of Fasching with a feast, music and merriment. So, gather your friends and pick a theme. Bring your costumes and table decorations, and help us celebrate Mardi Gras - German style. There will be a contest for best costume in the male and female category along with Best Overall Presentation. Music will be provided by Dan Witucki and Band. Whitewater-Watching Hike - 11/7, 11/15 & 11/21/15 at 11am-2pm
Hike down to Bridal Veil Falls to watch brave souls navigate the swift moving waters of Tallulah River. The water flowing through the gorge will be much stronger than usual, making the falls even more beautiful. Bring a snack and lots of water. The hike is strenuous.
