Barker's Creek Gristmill Demonstration - 5/7/16
Barker's Creek Mill has been providing the local community with milling services since 1944. It is built on the site of an older mill that served the community since the first white settlers arrived in the area in the 1820s. The mill is powered by a 12-foot overshot wheel set on babbet bearings. The mill itself is a vertical mill with two 16" flint/granite stones. Our volunteer miller is happy to answer any questions. Our stone-ground grits and cornmeal are available for purchase at the mill, or at the Hambidge Center gallery and gift shop. Free admission and parking. Annual WineFest - 5/7/16 at 12noon-5pm
This is your chance to taste Georgia wines made from locally grown grapes in one location. Many of our wines have won regional, national and international competitions. Foxfire Folklife Celebration - 5/7/16 at 9am-4:30pm
Travel 200 years back in time. Experience pioneer Appalachia as brought to life by local volunteers at The Foxfire Museum & Heritage Center, with some adults and children dressed in 1800s period costumes, showcasing the many facets of life in the North Georgia Mountains. Musicians will be performing; a "smithy" will be at work in the Blacksmith Shop; woodworkers, potters, our lovely corn shuck doll maker, and the soap maker will be demonstrating their trade; folks will be cooking over an open hearth in the Savannah House; and our very own Village Weaver will be knitting or weaving with the young ones. Other traditional activities, including some children's games, may take place as well! A shuttle bus will be operating from the two church parking lots at the lower end of Cross Street (just off US 441). Foxfire asks that those who can, please park at the churches and ride the shuttles to the Museum to preserve the Museum's limited parking for visitors with mobility issues. Barker's Creek Gristmill Demonstration - 8/1/16
Barker's Creek Mill has been providing the local community with milling services since 1944. It is built on the site of an older mill that served the community since the first white settlers arrived in the area in the 1820s. The mill is powered by a 12-foot overshot wheel set on babbet bearings. The mill itself is a vertical mill with two 16" flint/granite stones. Our volunteer miller is happy to answer any questions. Our stone-ground grits and cornmeal are available for purchase at the mill, or at the Hambidge Center gallery and gift shop. Free admission and parking. A Long And Accomplished Life Exhibit Opens - 10/22 & 10/25 - 10/29/16
This exhibition will feature a surgical re-enactment of the first painless surgery and musical entertainment by Sally and the Jefferson Fiddle Kids. The exhibit, which replaces the Medicine of the Civil War exhibit, will include documents and items from the vault relating to Dr. Long that have not previously been on display. Barker's Creek Gristmill Demonstration - 11/5/16
Barker's Creek Mill has been providing the local community with milling services since 1944. It is built on the site of an older mill that served the community since the first white settlers arrived in the area in the 1820s. The mill is powered by a 12-foot overshot wheel set on babbet bearings. The mill itself is a vertical mill with two 16" flint/granite stones. Our volunteer miller is happy to answer any questions. Our stone-ground grits and cornmeal are available for purchase at the mill, or at the Hambidge Center gallery and gift shop. Free admission and parking. Forgotten History: Hidden Gems of Richard B. Russell State Park - 11/5/16 at 2-3pm
Our popular disc golf course and other popular park areas are home to what remains of past homesteads that visitors easily overlook. This Naturalist-led hike will replay in living history how the families lived in previous centuries. An interactive demonstration garden is also planned for a site. Whitewater-Watching Hike - 11/5 - 11/6, 11/12 - 11/13 & 11/19 - 11/20/16 at 11am-3pm
Hike down to Bridal Veil Falls to watch brave souls navigate the swift moving waters of Tallulah River. The water flowing through the gorge will be much stronger than usual, making the falls even more beautiful. Bring a snack and lots of water. The hike is strenuous. Register in advance. Take a guided hike through the captivating scenery of Smithgall Woods. Guided hikes will be offered every second Saturday of the month (weather permitting). Throughout the year, hikes will rotate through the various trails located throughout Smithgall. All ages are welcome. Our Boos and Brews event combines many of Dahlonega Walking Tours signature paranormal stories with many new stories on a .5 mile paranormal walk.
