The play is the story of the eccentric Brewster family of Brooklyn, N.Y. In addition to the scheming old women who poison their victims with elderberry wine, the family includes Teddy, who suffers delusions that he is Theodore Roosevelt and that the Panama Canal runs through the cellar of his home. The locks he digs become convenient graves for the lonely men who fall victims to Aunt Martha and Aunt Abby’s machinations. When their nephew Mortimer discovers a body under the window seat of his aunts’ home, however, the elderly women ‘fess up to their deeds matter-of-factly and the events of the play become more absurd right up to a surprise ending. Winter Pottery Fest - 2/13 - 2/15/10 at 10 am - 5 pm
Exhibits & video show how men and women settled these mountain valleys, shaping earth and water into vessels and implements necessary for survival. During the next century, families passed these skills to younger generations who have created face jugs, decorated ware and animal figures now valued and collected as distinctive folk art. Several folk potters will demonstrate how these traditional methods are used today. The exhibition includes a series of 150 stunning objects that chronicle Diana’s life and invite the visitor to share the milestones of her many roles: as a youngster, schoolgirl and athlete; as the shy kindergarten teacher who captured the heart of the Prince and the public; as the young, ravishing royal bride; as the devoted mother, sister and daughter; and as the tireless charity advocate and spokeswoman. Also featured in the exhibition are portraits of her ancestors, family jewels, heirlooms, paintings, artifacts and photos, which provide historical context. Home movies filmed by her father and scenes from her childhood, her engagement to Prince Charles and the events leading up to the Royal Wedding are remembered and animated with video clips, personal possessions, photos, displays and letters. Featuring more than 80 documents, images, photographs and sound recordings that exemplify the depth of records in the National Archives chronicling the evolution of human and civil rights in the United States. From a slave manifest dated 1844 to the 5 cases that comprised the 1984 Brown v Board of Education decision, the exhibit gives voice to those who fought for or championed personal rights and freedoms. This live star talk explores the constellations and planets visible from Middle Georgia. Updated each week, this program provides the latest information about current and upcoming celestial events for those who want to learn how to find constellations or planets in the sky, or increase their knowledge of astronomy. Join this fun Saturday adventure and share what you learned by leading an activity station at our annual Forest Festival on March 3rd! Our Shared Forests (OSF) is Ecuador and Georgia’s Migratory Bird Partnership. In Ecuador, OSF targets habitat conservation throughout the Chocó Andean Corridor, one of the earth’s top five biodiversity hotspots. While, in both Ecuador and Georgia, it aims at creating awareness about 10 bird species that migrate between both regions. This Saturday program series explores migratory birds and their shared habitats through exciting hands-on activities including discovery hunts, bird observation and ID at feeding stations, a migration game, hikes, related crafts and a variety of other hands-on activities. 2010 Southern Garden Heritage Conference - 2/19/10 at 9 am – 4 pm
Robin Salmon will open the conference with a lecture about garden sculpture and close the conference with a presentation about Brookgreen Gardens, one of America's finest sculpture gardens. Sue Burgess will provide a brief history of efforts to save the historic Root House in Marietta and create a garden of the period. Keyes Williamson will provide an update on work being done to preserve the Elizabeth Lawrence Garden in Charlotte. John Waters and Jim Cothran will provide a look into the architecture and gardens of Savannah and their interrelationships. And Gerard Krewer will speak about some of Georgia's rare and unusual fruits-some familiar and some unfamiliar. Students will learn the basics of identifying deciduous trees in their dormant condition by observing and describing twigs, bark, leaf scars, fruits, branching patterns, and tree form.
