Children will especially love the interactive exhibits on botany and biology. The nature center also offers nature walks, canoe rentals, group programs and kayak tours.

Tidelands Nature Center offers hands-on marine environmental science programs for the general public and school groups. Stop in to meet a young sea turtle, alligators, fish, hermit crabs, snakes and other animals native to Georgia's coast. Take a guided kayak tour of Jekyll Creek, or rent a canoe and enjoy a relaxing paddle on Rixen Pond.

Nature walks are available throughout the year. Learn about Jekyll's coastal ecosystems. Join one of our guides on a walk to the beach, forest or marsh. Tidelands offers hands-on marine science and environmental education programs for school groups and the general public.
Discover the ecology and the animals of Jekyll Island Georgia. This is a great opportunity to discover Georgia's barrier island ecosystems!

Beach Ecology: A look at barrier island dynamics and the amazing organisms found along the coast of Georgia. Topics include: beach dynamics, erosion, sand depostion, waves and tides, beachcombing.

Marsh Ecology: A look at Georgia's abundant salt marsh. Learn about tidal creeks, estuaries, food webs, spartina grass, and the importance of the marsh environment.

Seining and Nets: Learn how to use a seine net, and learn about the fish, shrimp, crabs, and other animals that inhabit the near-shore waters of Coastal Georgia.

Herpetology: A hands-on encounter with native reptiles and amphibians. Learn about the biology and ecological roles of our local "herps", and get the opportunity to handle snakes, turtles, alligators, and more.

Aditional programs include: dock study, maritime forest ecology, ornithology, sea turtles, sharks, marine mammals, plankton lab, and environmental issues.

Program Options and Costs
Field-based, off-site programs (including beach, marsh, and seining programs):
Approximately 90 minutes per program.

On-site programs (including herpetology and sea turtle programs):
Approximately 1 hour, includes walk-through of Tidelands exhibit area.

Exhibit Area Walk-Through: Includes admission to Tidelands exhibit area, featuring live animal exhibits, touch tanks, and educational displays.

Our programs for school groups are correlated to Georgia's GPS curriculum standards. We can customize programs for other groups with specific curriculum needs, including Boy Scout merit badge classes, youth groups, recreation programs, elder hostel groups, and home school groups.
